چکیده
Since its founding, NASA has been dedicated to the advancement of aeronautics and space science. The NASA Scientific and Technical Information (STI) Program Office plays a key part in helping NASA maintain this important role. The NASA STI Program Office is operated by Langley Research Center, the lead center for NASA's scientific and technical information. The NASA STI Program Office provides access to the NASA STI Database, the largest collection of aeronautical and space science STI in the world. The Program Office is also NASA's institutional mechanism for disseminating the results of its research and development activities. These results are published by NASA in the NASA STI Report Series, which includes the following report types: • TECHNICAL PUBLICATION. Reports of completed research or a major significant phase of research that present the results of NASA programs and include extensive data or theoretical analysis. Includes compilations of significant scientific and technical data and information deemed to be of continuing reference value. NASA counterpart of peer-reviewed formal professional papers, but having less stringent limitations on manuscript length and extent of graphic presentations. • TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM. Scientific and technical findings that are preliminary or of specialized interest, e.g., quick release reports, working papers, and bibliographies that contain minimal annotation. Does not contain extensive analysis. • CONTRACTOR REPORT. Scientific and technical findings by NASA-sponsored contractors and grantees. • CONFERENCE PUBLICATION. Collected papers from scientific and technical conferences, symposia, seminars, or other meetings sponsored or co-sponsored by NASA. • TECHNICAL TRANSLATION. English-language translations of foreign scientific and technical material pertinent to NASA's mission. Specialized services that complement the STI Program Office's diverse offerings include creating custom thesauri, building customized databases, organizing and publishing research results ... even providing videos. ABSTRACT A mesh deformation scheme is developed for a structured multi-block Navier-Stokes code consisting of two steps. The first step is a finite element solution of either user defined or automatically generated macro-elements. Macro-elements are hexagonal finite elements created from a subset of points from the full mesh. When assembled, the finite element system spans the complete flow domain. Macro-element moduli vary according to the distance to the nearest surface, resulting in extremely stiff elements near a moving surface and very pliable elements away from boundaries. Solution of the finite element system for the imposed boundary deflections generally produces smoothly varying nodal deflections. The manner in which distance to the nearest surface has been found to …

An Adaptive Finite Element Heterogeneous Multiscale Method for Stokes Flow in Porous Media
A finite element heterogeneous multiscale method is proposed for solving the Stokes problem in porous media. The method is based on the coupling of an effective Darcy equation on a macroscopic mesh, with unknown permeabilities recovered from micro finite element calculations for Stokes problems on sampling domains centered at quadrature points in each macro element. The numerical method account...
متن کاملA Comparison of Parallel Block Multi-level Preconditioners for the Incompressible Navier–stokes Equations
Over the past several years, considerable effort has been placed on developing efficient solution algorithms for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. The effectiveness of these methods requires that the solution techniques for the linear subproblems generated by these algorithms exhibit robust and rapid convergence; These methods should be insensitive to problem parameters such as mesh s...
متن کاملTwo-level Penalized Finite Element Methods for the Stationary Navier-stoke Equations
In this article, we first consider some penalized finite element methods for the stationary Navier-stokes equations, based on the finite element space pair (Xh, Mh) which satisfies the discrete inf-sup condition for the P2−P0 element or does not satisfy the discrete inf-sup condition for the P1−P0 element. Then, we consider two-level penalty finite element methods which involve solving one smal...
متن کاملA comparison of preconditioners for incompressible Navier-Stokes solvers
We consider solution methods for large systems of linear equations that arise from the finite element discretization of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. These systems are of the so-called saddle point type, which means that there is a large block of zeros on the main diagonal. To solve these types of systems efficiently, several block preconditioners have been published. These types ...
متن کاملA new family of stable mixed finite elements for the 3D Stokes equations
A natural mixed-element approach for the Stokes equations in the velocity-pressure formulation would approximate the velocity by continuous piecewise-polynomials and would approximate the pressure by discontinuous piecewise-polynomials of one degree lower. However, many such elements are unstable in 2D and 3D. This paper is devoted to proving that the mixed finite elements of this Pk-Pk−1 type ...
